Wright는 조지아주 하히라 라는 작은 마을에서 세 자녀 중 하나이자 교회 의 목사이자 음악 감독의 딸로 태어났습니다. 그녀는 어린 시절 교회에서 가스펠 음악과 피아노 연주를 시작했으며 재즈 와 블루스 에도 관심을 갖게 되었습니다 . 그녀는 휴스턴 카운티 고등학교에 다녔고 그곳에서 합창 에 크게 참여 하여 National Choral Award 를 수상했습니다 . 그녀는 노래를 공부하기 위해 애틀랜타 의 조지아 주립 대학 에 갔습니다.

그 이후로 그녀는 뉴욕 의 New School과 BC 주 밴쿠버 에서 공부했습니다 .

Wright는 2000년에 애틀랜타에 기반을 둔 보컬 4중주 In the Spirit에 합류했고 2002년에 Verve Records와 녹음 계약을 맺었습니다 . 여기서 그녀의 작곡과 보컬 스타일은 그녀를 Norah Jones 와 비교하게 만들었습니다 . 

그녀의 첫 번째 앨범인 Salt 는 2003년 봄에 발매되었고 [3] 2004년 빌보드 탑 컨템포러리 재즈 차트에서 2위에 올랐습니다. 그녀의 다음 앨범 은 포크 음악 을 통합하면서 재즈와 팝 의 조화를 유지했습니다 . Dreaming Wide Awake 는 2005년 6월에 발매되었고  2005년과 2006년에 Top Contemporary Jazz 차트에서 1위에 올랐습니다.

2008년 Wright는 The Orchard 를 출시하여 긍정적인 평가를 받았습니다. 그녀는 2010년에 그녀의 4번째 앨범인 Fellowship 을 발표했습니다. Fellowship 의 대부분의 노래 는 가스펠 표준입니다.
