이 곡의 원곡인 'Mbube'는 남아프리카 공화국의 줄루족 출신 가수 솔로몬 린다(Solomon Linda)의 곡으로, 어린시절 양을 치다가 사자를 만난 경험을 되살려 사자라는 의미의 줄루어 '음부베(Mbube)'라는 단어로 노래를 만들었다.

 

1939년 그의 6인조 아카펠라 그룹인 'The Evening Birds'와 함께 'Mbube' 란 곡으로 발표하여 10만장이 팔리는 기록을 남겼다. 앨범 발매 당시의 연도와 아프리카라는 상황을 감안해 보면 대단한 히트라고 할 수 있다.
