[Leo Sayer(리오 세이어, 본명 Gerard Sayer)]는

60년대 후반 런던에 기반을 둔 [Terraplane Blues] 밴드에서

음악 활동을 시작해 70년대에는 아주 세련된 주류 팝 음악으로 당대

디스코계의 상징이라는 찬사를 받으며 인기를 누렸던 아티스트이다. 1971년

드러머이자 작곡가인 [Dave Courtney]와 [Patches]라는 그룹을 결성한 [Leo Sayer]는

브리티쉬 팝 스타인 [Adam Faith]를 만나 그의 후원으로 솔로 아티스트의 길을 걷게 된다.

[Dave Courtney]와 함께 공동 작업으로 자신의 데뷔 앨범을 녹음하던 중 그들은

[Roger Daltrey]의 앨범에도 곡을 쓰게 되었고 [Roger Daltrey]의

최고 히트곡인 [Giving It All Away]를 탄생시킨다

 

[Leo Sayer]의 데뷔 싱글인 [Why Is Everybody Going Home]은

불행히도 별 반응을 얻지 못했지만 73년 싱글 [The Show Must Go On]이 UK

차트 1위에 오르면서 이에 힘입어 첫 앨범 [Silverbird(74)]를 발매하게 된다. 같은 해

[Just a Boy]를 발표한 그는 [Long Tall Glasses(I Can Dance)]로 처음으로 미국 차트에 진입해

톱 텐에 오르는 성과를 거둔다. [Another Year(75)]까지 [Dave Courtney]와 함께 작업했던

그는 새로운 작곡 파트너인 [Frank Furrell]을 맞이해 [Endless Flight(76)]를 발표하여

[You Make Me Feel Like Dancing], [When I Need You]의 히트로 플래티넘을

기록하는 대 성공을 거두었으며 [You Make Me Feel Like Dancing]으로는

그래미 최고 R&B 송을 수상하는 영광을 얻었다. 그러나 70년대 후반에는

별다른 히트곡 없이 상업적으로도 침체기에 접어든다.

 

80년대 초반 [More Than I can Say]로 UK 차트 2위를 기록하고

81년 [Living in a Fantasy], 83년 [Till You Come Back to Me]등으로

차트에 진입하며 간간이 히트곡들을 발매한 그는 90년 [Cool Touch]를 발매하기

전까지 레코딩 업계에서 한동안 자취를 감추었다. 90년 EMI와 계약하여 70년대의 영화를

다시 누리기 위해 활발한 활동을 펼친 [Leo Sayer]는 93년 [The Show Must Go On: The Leo..]를

비롯한 일련의 편집 앨범들을 발표했다. 싱어송라이터로서 디스코 댄스에서 감미로운 러브송에

이르기까지 다양성을 구가하고 있는 리오 세이어는 지금도 여전히 앨범제작과 공연에

몰두하며 중년의 음악인으로서 성숙한 음악세계를 지속적으로 펼쳐가고 있다.
