• 비틀즈로부터 막대한 은혜를 입은 영국 요크셔 태생의 4인조 소프트 팝록 밴드 스모키(Smokie)의 국내에서의 인기는 Fab 4(비틀즈의 별명)와 맞먹었다. 1970년대 중반부터   1980년대까지 ''Living next door to Alice'', ''Don''t play Rock''n Roll to me'', ''If you think you know how to love me'', ''Mexican girl'', ''What can I do?'', ''I''ll meet you at midnight'' 등으로 우리나라 라디오를 도배했으며 이들의 베스트 음반은 지금까지도 꾸준히 팔리는 스테디셀러 반열에 오른 지 오래다.
  
  이들의 역사는 지금으로부터 35년 전인 1966년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 보컬에 크리스 노만(Chris Norman), 기타는 테리 우틀리(Terry Uttley),   그리고 베이스 주자에 알란 실슨(Alan Silson)이 모여 출범시킨 ''엘리자베단스(Elizabethans)''란 그룹이 스모키의 모체였다. 곧 피트 스펜서(Pete Spencer)가 드러머로 가입하자 친절하게도 이름을 ''카인드네스(Kindness)''로 바꾸고 1960년대 말부터 1970년대 초반까지 다수의 싱글들을 발표했지만 음악 팬들의 이목을 집중시키는데 실패했다.
